Chapter 14

“Should we help her?” I slid forward almost falling off the seat. Pain pulsed from my leg into my hip.

Damien pulled me back. “Don’t interrupt her vision. We might miss something.”

Without warning, Talitha went slack, then stared at me with her two-toned blue eyes. “Adalee, you’re going to die.”

My mind went blank. I frowned at her. I heard what she said, but her words didn’t register in my mind.

What did she say?

She drew in a deep breath, exhaled it in a puff of vapor, then looked around. “Let’s go inside.”

We shuffled back in then settled on her couch. Damien sat next to me, his legs spread wide, his chest open as if he were at home watching a movie on his couch. Talitha served us spiced cider with one herb I wasn’t familiar with but it made my taste buds tingle and my body warm.

When we all held clay mugs in our hands, she said, “In the well, I saw a vision of you. Someone cursed you with a deadly disease that if you don’t stop will eventually kill you. Before you ask your million questions, I don’t have any more answers. I don’t know who did it, why, or how to cure it.” She set the mug down and folded her lithe but strong hands on her lap. “I’m sorry.”

For a few moments, silence captured the room, strangling my sense of safety. I didn’t know how to feel about the news.

If we didn’t find an answer, I would die.

Damien side glanced at me, his eyes dark navy blue, like tumbling ocean waves. I didn’t like the tight fear I found in them. For him to feel fear meant something was truly wrong.

I took a sip of my cider. “Can I ask you about the rift vision?”

Talitha stilled her mug midair. “You’re almost out of questions. What is it?”

We still needed answers to be able to close the tear. “Can you tell me more about the ancient objects? What are they and how can we find them?”

She rolled a gulp of cider in her mouth. “Ah, yes. You’re lucky I was allowed to see the items. One is an ancient Fae vase and the other is a gold sword. The vase will have a familiar symbol on it. Only problem, I’m pretty sure they were stolen by someone hard to find.”

Damien focused his gaze on Talitha. “And who would that be?”

Talitha’s dark eyebrows rose on her forehead. “The Unseelie.”

I tapped my fingers on the earthy clay mug. “You’re pretty sure?”

She pursed her lips. “That’s the last I heard. It happened years and years ago when they were collecting things to amass the power they have now. You’ll have to find the women and the objects. And believe me, the Unseelie aren’t going to hand them over. It’s going to be a fight. Maybe someone will have to die.”

My veins iced. Bastard Unseelie. I was done for the night. I was done for a year, but this shit wouldn’t wait. I was going to go after them.
